Bellingham Must Drop the Nonsense to Earn a Star Position With Tuchel.
For Bellingham to aims to force his way once again into England’s top squad, the smart move to cut out the unnecessary reactions. His reaction upon realizing that he was about to come up after an evening of uneven play in the match against Albania fell short of expectations.
"I don’t want to overstate it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the players who substitute on," stated Tuchel. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it when you're on the field."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for a strop. Kane had just put England two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, the game had six minutes to go and he, after a below-par performance, received a caution for bringing down the Albanian striker. This could scarcely be called a questionable change. Actually it would have been foolish for the manager to not substitute him considering there was a chance the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the first match of the competition by picking up a another booking.
Shifting Focus Upon Himself
However, the player turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s disappointment when he clocked that he was going to make way for a teammate. He threw his arms up and while he accepted the coach's hand while heading to the sideline it was obvious that the head coach was displeased.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He applauded Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Harry Kane to score the team's second, but his other actions was counterproductive. It is not as if complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The German has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the importance of behaving correctly.
Under Scrutiny
Bellingham, not included in the team last month, has been under scrutiny after returning to the team in the current camp. Essentially he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to his substitution as the national team rounded off a ideal group stage by seeing off a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.
The Coach's Plan
As a result the jury is out on if England operate most effectively including Bellingham. The evidence here was inconclusive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager early on. He has provided the squad a clear system over the past few matches, building with a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a No 10 and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different against Albania. The young defender was given his first cap, Wharton was in the starting lineup for England and the positioning of John Stones as a part-time midfielder gave a passing resemblance to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.
A Game of Two Halves
Bellingham had ups and downs. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed trying too hard. He made many poorly executed passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with an Albania midfielder at the beginning. The team looked disjointed during most of the second period. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when an opponent took the ball by Broja and committed a foul on the attacker.
Substitutes Decide
Ultimately the bench quality proved crucial. The coach brought on Phil Foden, who seemed better suited to the position occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka delivered a set-piece for Harry Kane to open the scoring. It highlighted that dead-ball situations will be crucial in the upcoming tournament.
Connection Remains
Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was somewhat overlooked due to the fuss of the Rogers substitution. After the final whistle, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel came over behind him and directed Bellingham towards the away supporters. Their relationship remains intact. The coach isn't ready to give up on Bellingham yet. However, whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him a starring role is not guaranteed.
