Chicago's MLB Team Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Deal.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The agreement features a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of $16 million for the next season and $17M for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract includes that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the division but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, surpassing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win.
