A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene displayed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
