The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is built upon, including a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
